Six Senses Laamu, Laamu Atoll, Maldives

Six Senses Laamu is the only resort on the virtually uncharted Laamu atoll, deep in the Indian Ocean. The island is of outstanding natural beauty, powder white sand, lush tropical vegetation and crystal clear waters. Its villas are eco-friendly yet luxurious in every way and sit on the beach or over the turquoise water of the lagoon. The bars and restaurants offer the best organic, fresh food, locally grown and caught, cocktails inspired by original ‘tropical’ recipes, over 500 wines kept in a climatically controlled towering glass wine ‘cellar’ and fun; music, cabaret, visiting DJ’s, visiting mixologists, visiting chefs. Service is second to none, with Six Senses ‘Mr Friday’ butlers overseeing every need from arrival to departure.

Location and Transfers

Six Senses Laamu is located on the privately owned Olhuveli Island in the Laamu Atoll, towards the south of the Maldives archipelago. From the gateway to the Maldives – Male International Airport – it is approximately 40 minutes by plane to nearby Kadhdhoo Airport, then a 15 minute boat ride to Olhuveli Island.

Accommodation

Beach Villas – lush forest surrounds these stylishly sustainable beach houses in the utmost romantic privacy. Plumped up beach loungers have been strategically placed for sunshine and shade between the sparkling sea and high ceilinged retreat. Inside, organic cotton sheets and customizable pillows top the cloudlike bed, angled to optimize blue views. Shower in open-air bamboo encircled privacy then climb to the treetop deck for a uniquely Maldivian panorama of emerald jungle to sapphire seascape and unobstructed equatorial sunset

Two Bedroom Beach Villa with Pool – similar facilities to Beach Villa above with the addition of a second bedroom and a pool

Water Villas – weathered wood jetties lead to these overwater havens secluded by high bamboo enclosures. Relax outside on padded daybeds, overwater hammocks or at the glass dining table set above the gently swaying sea. Within each high ceilinged retreat, organic cotton sheets and customizable pillows top the cloudlike bed angled to optimize blue views. Soak up more Indian Ocean from the all glass bathtub and shower in the open air alongside a private water garden. Climb up to the treetop deck for a uniquely Maldivian panorama of the sapphire seascape and unobstructed equatorial sunset

Dining

Sea breezes drift among the rustic woods under high palm roofs at Laamu’s six bars and restaurants, most set over water. Edible memories at each are enhanced by exquisite tropical vistas, from pulsating equatorial sunrises above translucent turquoise waters to romantic rose coloured sunsets into the inky evening sea.

Leaf – the resort’s signature restaurant serving inventive Mediterranean dishes

Longitude – along Hithadhoo Kandu, a natural waterway for bottlenose dolphins to the open sea, this open air, two-storey dining space begins each day with Parisians’ approved croissants, fresh bread from the oven, pancakes, waffles or eggs made to order. At dinner an a la carte international menu is served

Es’sense – this humble, over water cooking hut turns out a global array of authentic fare from spicy Indian curries, pad Thai and Chinese stir fry to piping hot pies from the wood fire pizza oven

Altitude – rising 6.4 metres above the Indian Ocean, this one-of-a-kind sunlit, spun glass wine tower holds 400 Old and New world vintages, half of which are organic. Many are otherwise unavailable in the Maldives. Tastings take place at the intimate, elevated table. Down below, the Deli stocks imported European charcuterie and cheeses, plus inventive chutneys and sushi fresh from the surrounding sea

Ice – al fresco ice cream parlour serving forty plus ever-changing ice cream flavours plus sorbets, freshly made waffle cones and toppings such as gooey chocolate sauce, sliced nuts and colourful candies. There’s also a Chocolate Studio where the pastry chef infuses chocolate truffles with cinnamon, green tea, lavender and mint mojito

Chai – afternoons are for taking tea high above the white-capped waves, on colourfully padded day beds and chaises overlooking the Indian Ocean. For even better views, gaze through the professional telescope. Snack on what Maldivians call ‘short eats’ at this second story lounge & bar

Chill – early mornings find Helen the resident mixologist in Laamu’s organic gardens, picking rosemary, mint, lemongrass and ripe fruits for homegrown cocktails. By nightfall, you’ll find her, smoking gun in hand, decanting molecular concoctions behind the sunken over-water bar while visiting DJs and jazz musicians provide equally inspired acoustics

Deck-a-Dence – further into Laamu’s lagoon where Napoleon wrasse and parrotfish swim along a spectrum of thriving coral, these six glass aquarium tables above the sea are the only spot in the Maldives to dine on a zero carbon menu. While stars illuminate the scene from above and waves lap soothingly underneath, feast on inventive, entirely local fare such as grilled reef fish over a fire of coconut shells with Maldivian spices, coriander and lime, a memorable meal as groundbreaking as it is gourmet
